Ella Mae Snyder died peacefully April 8, 2014 at Whittier Nursing Facility at age 92. She was born in Hudson on December 1, 1921 to Margaret and Howard Sweet. Ella was predeceased by her husband, Harold Snyder, two brothers, Widmer (Woody) Sweet and Howard Sweet, Jr., and two sisters, Pauline Nitsky and Viola Lippera. She is survived by two sisters, Marcia (Roger) Garcia and Betty Pulver, and many nieces and nephews. A calling hour will be held from 9 to 10 am Friday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 10 am Friday at the funeral home. Everett F. Miller

Everett F. Miller, 86, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at the Firemen’s Home in Hudson with his loving family by his side. Born March 30, 1928 in Hudson, he was the son of the late Everett W. and Grace (Burns) Miller. He served in the US Army from 1950 – 1952 during the Korean War. Everett worked for the NY Telephone Company for 33 years before retiring as bureau foreman in Catskill. He was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a gallon blood donor, a member of the Ghent Rod and Gun Club, and a member of Greenport Pumper Company #1. He loved his family and enjoyed spending the winters in Florida. Surviving are his wife, Jeanne (Morrison) Miller of Claverack; his son, James E. Miller of Saugerties, his daughter, Lisa M. Albert and two grandchildren, Ian P. and Hannah A. Albert, all of Northford, CT, his sister-in-law, Mary Miller of Wilbraham, MA, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, William Miller and his sister, Patricia. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 am Monday, April 14, 2014 at St. Mary’s Church, 429 East Allen St., Hudson. Burial will be in the Mellenville Union Cemetery. Donations may be made to Community Hospice of Columbia Greene, 47 Liberty St., Catskill, NY, 12414, or to the Firemen’s Home, 125 Harry Howard Avenue, Hudson, NY, 12534, or to a charity of your choice.

Elizabeth Mayhood

Elizabeth Mayhood passed away at Columbia Memorial Hospital on April 11, 2014 after a short illness. Elizabeth was born on March 3, 1922 in Corona, New York. She was the daughter of Sadie and Frank Mayhood. The family moved to East Chatham in 1926. Elizabeth attended Chatham Schools and graduated in 1940. She continued her education at NYU and Pratt Institute, receiving a Masters Degree in Dietetics. She was the Head of the Dietary Department at John Andrus Memorial Home in Hastings-On-The-Hudson for 32 years. She was a member of the ADA and a life long learner. Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents, and sisters, Evelyn and Marie. She is survived by nephews, David Sleezer (Mary), Barry Gimpel (Jean), and niece, Terry Lynn Knott. There is no wake. The family will conduct a graveside service. A memorial service in celebration of her life will take place at the Mt. Pleasant Reformed Church at a later date.

Leon F. Cook, Jr.

Leon F. Cook, Jr., 90, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Columbia Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 8, 1923 and was the eldest son of Marion and Leon F. Cook, Sr. of Claverack. He married Eleanor Chamberlin on February 24, 1945 and they were together for 66 years, until her death in 2011. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Dorothy (Van Deusen), and two brothers, Calvin and Alan Cook. Leon is survived by his children, Dr. William “Bill” Cook, Wendell “Wendy” Cook (Kay), and Lesley Sherman (Mark). Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Marieke Cook, Nicolette Cook, Erin Cook Bornt, Amanda Weaver, Michael Weaver, Melissa Pollack, and Michael Pollack, and two great-grandsons, Jeremy Bornt and Christopher Pollack. He was born and raised in Claverack, attended Hudson High School, and attended college in Cobleskill. He enlisted in the Army in 1945. He “slipped away” from his post in NYC and returned to Claverack to marry, two days before shipping out to Germany. After the war, he returned to Claverack and soon went into business for himself. He owned and operated Leon F. Cook, Jr., Inc. for over 60 years, doing plumbing, heating, and electrical work. He served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 121 for over 20 years, where he educated, guided, and mentored countless scouts, many of whom maintained contact with him over the years. Leon was a member of the Masonic Lodge #7 in Hudson, The A.B. Shaw Fire Company in Claverack (where he was past chief), and a 75 year member of The Reformed Dutch Church of Claverack. Visiting hours are 4-8 pm Friday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 11 am Saturday at The Reformed Dutch Church of Claverack. Memorial contributions to The Reformed Dutch Church of Claverack and A.B. Shaw Fire Company are welcome.

Christina M. Simmons, 66, of Stottville, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 at her residence with her family by her side. Born March 28, 1948 in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Mabel Krauss. She was a Medicare biller at Columbia Memorial Hospital. Christina was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Stockport and a member of the Senior Citizens Group. Christina is the beloved mother of Robert Simmons, Jr., and his wife, Kelly, of Hudson; devoted grandmother of Matthew and Jonathon Simmons, both of Hudson, and loving sister of Kenneth (Judy) Krauss of Texas, Charlene Johnson of Connecticut, and Virginia Padlaski of Chatham. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and many in-laws. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Robert T. Simmons, Sr. in 2007. A calling hour will begin at 1 pm Wednesday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Services will follow at 2 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Lucia Cusumano (Tartaglia), 85 years old, of Hudson, was called by her Heavenly Father on April 21st, 2014 at Columbia Memorial Hospital. Born Nov. 4th, 1928 in Francofonte, Italy, she was the daughter of Angelo Tartaglia and Maria Nivia (Bontempone) of Italy. Lucia was predeceased by her husband Salvatore Cusumano of Hudson, her brother, Paolo, and sister, Sara, of Italy. She is survived by her son, Antonino (TJ) Cusumano and daughter-in-law, Josephine, of Hudson, her daughter, Sebastiana of Hudson, three grandchildren, Salvatore Cusumano, Lucia Burger, and Sara Cusumano, their spouses and 6 great-grandchildren all of Hudson. Lucia was a talented seamstress, but her greatest joy was cooking delicious meals for her family and friends. Lucia was adored by all who knew her. She had a loving and generous heart and was always thoughtful and giving to others. Calling hours are 11am – 1pm Thursday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Helen was a homemaker. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Bonnie Stevenson of Greenport; two brothers, Walter Doty of Berlin and Frederick Doty of Claverack; her sister, Anna Tomasitz of Greenport, and several nieces and nephews. Born on June 26, 1924 in Clermont, he was the son of the late James and Anne (Van Etten) Lasher.. Alfred was a machine operator at the L & B Corp in Stottville. He served in the US Army during WW II as a Technician Fifth Grade with Company “1″ 110th Infantry. He was a member of the American Legion 184, the Hudson VFW, and the N.R.A. Alfred was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jean F. (Kilmer) Lasher; his daughter, Bette Jean “Pepe” Makas, two grandchildren, Madison and Zachary Johnson, and his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his devoted daughters, Linda (Raymond) Fenoff of Livingston and Patricia Johnson (Mark Dauenheimer) of Greenport; his loving grandchildren, James (Doreen) Fenoff of Chatham, Christine (Chris) DeGraff of Hudson, Steven (Mary Ann) Makas of Hudson, Renee (Christine) Makas of Schenectady, and Michele (Donnie) Makas of Catskill; seven great-grandchildren, Jennifer Akin, Jessica Williams, Jacklyn Fenoff, Julie Fenoff, Erin Makas, and Hunter and Ryan DeGraff, and several nieces and nephews. Cynthia A. Myrdycz passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Columbia Memorial Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born March 22, 1958 to Nancy (Avery) Spiewak (Peter) and the late Raymond Shook Sr. of Hudson. She was predeceased by her brother Raymond Jr. Surviving are her sister Desiree Konkus, two brothers Timothy and Michael Shook, her husband Nicholas Myrdycz, Sr., whom she married on September 24,1977, their two sons, Nicholas Jr. (Nadine) and Michael (Melissa), her four grandchildren and her four legged son Basil. Cynthia was a kind, caring , loving friend, daughter, mother and grandmother. She worked at Prominade Hill Center COARC in Hudson for the past 20 years. She loved her job and her coworkers. She was predeceased by her husband, William K. Peters, and eight siblings, Rose Leonetti, Elizabeth DeFile, Caroline Jablanski, Anna Rivers, Generino Scalera, Anthony Scalera, Carlo Scalera, and John Scalera. Born January 31, 1964 in Hudson, she is the beloved daughter of Eleanor (McNaughton) Walsh of Chatham and the late Richard Walsh. Judith was a bank teller for the Hudson River Bank and First Niagara Bank. She enjoyed doing crafts and sewing. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her devoted husband, Nicolas Flores of Schenectady, her loving sister and brother-in-law, Coleen and Jeffrey Steward of Valatie, three nephews, Jeremy (Janette) Steward of Harleysville, PA, Timothy (Chrystal) Walsh of Virginia, and Jason Walsh of Valatie, and her niece, Amberly Steward of Arlington, MA. Also surviving are four great-nieces and great-nephews, Adam and Annabell Steward and Grace and Samuel Walsh. Besides her father, she was predeceased by her brother, Stephen Walsh. Dorothy Holsapple, 93, formerly of Hudson, died Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck. Born in Hudson on January 7, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Frank Burdwin Holsapple and Harriette (Palmer) Holsapple. She graduated from Hudson High School in the Class of 1938 and was later the office manager of the Rockefeller Foundation in Rockefeller Center until her retirement. She lived in New York City for many years before moving to The Woods in Rhinebeck. She lived at Arbor Ridge in Rhinebeck at the time of her death. She was active in The Church of St. John in Rhinebeck and previously at Christ Episcopal Church in Hudson. She enjoyed life, including her many friends, the arts, travel, opera and gardening. Dorothy is survived by her sister-in-law, Louise McKelvey Holsapple of White Plains, New York; a nephew, Peter Livingston Holsapple of Durham, North Carolina; and her nieces, Louise Holsapple Westover of New Haven, Connecticut and Mary Holsapple Sarubbi of Roselle, Illinois. A memorial service will be held at 4pm on Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home, 110 Green Street, Hudson, NY. Burial will follow in the family plot in Hudson City Cemetery.

Frances E. Halloran, 99, of Hudson, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Columbia Memorial Hospital. Born April 2, 1915 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Constantine and Valeria (Mayer) Kaczanowcke. Frances was a homemaker and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Hudson and enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles. She married Francis J. Halloran in St. Mary’s Church in 1937. They were married for 49 years before his passing in 1986. Frances is survived by her devoted sons, Neal Halloran of Greenport and Ronald (Cathy) Halloran of Poughkeepsie, her loving grandchildren, Jennifer Halloran of Poughkeepsie and Ryan (Jill) Halloran of Oklahoma City, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, Joseph, Charles, William, Kustic, and Helen K. Novack. Visiting hours are 3-6 pm Wednesday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Prayers will be held at 10:30 am Thursday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at St. Mary’s Church, 429 East Allen St., Hudson. Robert “Bob” C. Cunningham, 60, of Ghent, passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson.
Born September 1, 1953 in Brooklyn, he is the son of the late Williard and Elimina (Thompson) Cunningham. Bob was raised in Brooklyn and at age 13 moved to Columbia County, where he resided the rest of his life.
On June 6, 1981 he married Lucia “Luci” Fiorentino at the First Baptist Church in Hudson. Bob was a devoted family man and dedicated to his family. He had a great sense of humor that his family and friends enjoyed. He was a member of the Stottville Fire Department and loved being outdoors. He was an avid New England Patriots fan.
He was employed by the New York State Thruway in Canaan in the road maintenance department before retiring.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Luci, his devoted daughters, Jessica (Jason) Kastner and, Ashley Cunningham (Fiancé, Rob Donaghue), and his adored grandson and “partner in crime” Akiah Cunningham, with whom he spent a great deal of his time. Also surviving are his loving siblings, Freddy (Ady), Barbara, Billy (Kathy), Linda, Ronnie, Glen, and Pattie (David), his in-laws, Agostino and Concetta Fiorentino, and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are 4-7 pm Thursday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 11 am Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson.

ALICE M. BLAAUW ADMINISTRATOR Alice M. Blaauw, 79, of Mellenville, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. Born on October 26, 1934 in Jamaica, Queens, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Alice Sharp. Alice graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, NY, Class of 1952, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She also performed with the Rockettes in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Alice graduated from the Brooklyn Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. She worked at the Mineola Hospital, Sharon Hospital in Connecticut, and Columbia Memorial Hospital. In 1960, she went to work as a part time nurse at Pine Haven Nursing Home and then went full time. Alice moved up to Director of Nursing and then was appointed Administrator of Pine Haven. As Administrator she oversaw construction of the new Pine Haven Nursing Home 80 bed facility and eventually the addition of 40 more beds. Alice served as Administrator for 20 years before retiring in 1995. She was a life member, and treasurer, of the Philmont Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary, a member of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Philmont United Methodist Church. Alice is survived by her husband of 57 years, William “Bill” Blaauw; three sons, Robert (Mary Jane) of Averill Park, James of Topeka, Kansas, and John of Philmont; five grandchildren, Robert (Carla), Erica, Andrea, McKenzie, and Calista; and five great-grandchildren, Cameron, Madelyn, Tessa, Cody, and Georgianna. Also surviving are two sisters, Elsie (Laddie) Crisp and Barbara Gonzales, and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours are 4-8 pm Tuesday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 1 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Mellenville Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research.

Donaldine S. Berry

Donaldine S. Berry, 84, of Greenport, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014 at her residence. Born on July 29, 1929 in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Mary (Wood) Simmons. She was employed as a pharmacy technician for over 25 years at Columbia Memorial Hospital. She also worked at Wardell’s Drug Store in Hudson. Donaldine was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy. She was a member of the Church of St. Joseph in Stuyvesant Falls and chair person of the Christian Service Committee, the Columbia Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the Apple Valley Square Dancers, and the Philmont Community Chorus. She loved playing the violin, singing, and performing at nursing homes during the holidays. Donaldine was devoted to her family and enjoyed country line dancing, ball room dancing, fishing and camping. Donaldine was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, Raymond E. Berry, who died in 2010. Surviving are her devoted children, Donald (Carolyn) Berry of Wexford, Pennsylvania, Renee (Leonard) Ashdown of Stuyvesant Falls, Kyle (Clifford) Beede of Stuyvesant, and Andrea (Jeffrey) Seymour of Stockport; her loving grandchildren, Adrienne Berry, Alysse Berry, Haley Ashdown, Hannah Ashdown, and Katelyn Seymour, and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours are 4-7 pm Wednesday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am Thursday at the Church of St. Joseph in Stuyvesant Falls. Interment will be in Cedar Park Cemetery. Margaret loved socializing at the Hudson Boat Club, the NY Yankees, and reading. She was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Clifford G. McDarby, two sons, Allen and George McDarby, and a grandson, Lee McDarby. She is survived by her devoted grandson, and his wife, James H. and Hope McDarby of Stuyvesant, two grandchildren, Connor and Olivia McDarby, and several nieces and nephews. Brenda Mae Bermel, 71, of Livingston, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Columbia Memorial Hospital. Born February 11, 1943 in Rhinebeck, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Margaret (Coons) Miller. Brenda was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She volunteered her time at several nursing homes and with senior citizens in the area. She loved animals, especially her best friend “Mittens”. Brenda is survived by her husband, William “Pete” Bermel, Sr. of Livingston; her children, Deborah Bermel of Arizona, Tina Bermel of Virginia, William (Tina) Bermel, Jr. of North Carolina, Raymond Bermel of Catskill, and John (Jackie) Bermel of Hudson, seven grandsons, five granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, four brothers, four sisters, and many nieces and nephews. Robert D. Plass, 85, of Stockport, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Hudson on May 20, 1928, he was the son of the late Robert and Helen (Coons) Plass. Robert was employed in the shipping and receiving department at the V & O Press in Greenport. He was a 70 year member of the Stockport Volunteer Fire Company #1, where he served as a line officer for 27 years, 12 of those as Chief. Additionally he served as a company officer for 10 years. At the time of his death he was safety and accountability officer. While he was chief, he obtained two new engines, an emergency truck, and placed in service a brush truck “Smokey” which resides at the Firemen’s Home Museum in Hudson. Robert was a lifelong resident of Stockport. He was an avid NY Yankees fan and enjoyed playing cards. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eleanor (Cavanagh) Plass, his son, Robert J. Robert is survived by his devoted children, Sandra (Richard) Novak of Stockport, Sharon (Don) Hover of Stuyvesant Falls, and Ronald and Randall, both of Stockport; 12 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, his brother-in-law, Ralph Lasher, his sister-in-law, Betty Ahrens, and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are 4-8 pm Sunday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 11 am Monday at the funeral home. John C. Coleman, 69, born April 12, 1945 in Mobile, Alabama, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at his home in Ghent. He was a wonderful husband and loving father, grandfather, and uncle. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. John worked for the Northern Empire Land and Livestock Company in Hudson. He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Coleman, his daughters, Shanal, Christine, and Tessy, his son, Andrew, his brother, William Coleman, and several sisters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. A calling hour will begin at 7 pm Thursday at the Bates & Anderson – Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home.
