Ruth Ann Durham, 66 of Hudson NY went to heaven to rest Tuesday March 17, 2015 at Columbia Memorial Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Ruth was born in Catskill NY on July 7, 1948 to William and Bertha Swain (deceased). She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Stephen David Durham, her daughter Nicola Durham, and son Alex Durham of Hudson NY. A special mention to her loving and devoted niece Leomi Bell. Her sisters Josephine Holmes of Florida, Eloise Burgess of Connecticut, Linda Snoddy of South Carolina and Connie Iverson of New York, and a brother Bert Swain of New York along with a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her son Stephen David Durham Jr., her brothers Willie James, Arthur Frank, Daniel Swain as well as sisters Geneva Swain and Joyce Hill. Albert Canelli, 80, of Hudson, passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Firemen’s Home. Born in Fishkill on March 7, 1935, he was the son of the late Lou and Mary Canelli. Albert was a member of the Rombout Fire Company in Fishkill. He was employed as a care taker at the Graig House in Beacon, NY. Surviving are his children, Thomas Canelli (Amy), Albert Canelli, Jr. (Nikki Gordon) and Carol Kelley (Charles); 11 grandchildren, Tommy, Crystal, Joshua, Dane, Brandon, Jennifer, Sara, Anna Rose, Meghan, Michael, and Dentisney, and 14 great-grandchildren, Emily, Bryan, Jaiden, Jordan, Gabrielle, Gavin, Gunner, Jace, Mckenzie, Magnollia, Mahala, Madison, Jullian, Leonardo, and two on the way, and his ex-wife, Betty Owen. Paul F. Gerber, 77, of Ghent, passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson with his loving family by his side. He was born December 25, 1937. He is the son of the late Paul A. and Sophie (Aichele) Gerber. Paul served in the US Army from 1957 to 1960. He was employed in the Administration Department at Taconic Telephone in Chatham for over 40 years. He had a private pilot license for many years, loved going to the movies, enjoyed playing chess, and was very well read and had a keen interest in the unexplained. He was also a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Surviving are his wife, Virginia (Van Vliet) Gerber, four children, Paul R. Gerber, Jennifer Jennings, Lee Gerber, and Vincent Gerber, his brother, Ronald C. Hubert G. Klose, 85, of the Villages in Florida, formerly of Claverack, NY, passed away Monday, March 9, 2015 in Florida, surrounded by his family. Born on September 23, 1929 in the Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Martha (Vierhok) Klose. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Rudolph and Peter Klose. Hugh graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and Fordham University-Business. He was a member of the NY State National Guard in the Bronx during the Korean War. He worked with Shearson Hammill as a stock broker in Garden City, Long Island, and Real Estate Broker with Robert Froehlick RE in Elmont, NY, before moving to Hudson in 1972. He was an Associate Broker with Hudson Michael Realty until 1976, co-owner of Century 21 Heartland Realty from 1976-1980, Owner Broker of Random Realty in Claverack, NY, from 1981-1990, and as Associate Broker with Red Apple Realty until he retired in 2002. Hugh was President of the Holy Names Society, St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hempstead, NY, and President of the Columbia Greene Board of Realtors. He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Klose; five children, Joseph W. Klose (Kate) of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Ellen M. Maher (John) of Summit, NJ, Margaret A. Thayer (Wendall) of Voorheesville, NY, Patricia J. McAneny (Michael) of Greenville, NY, and Jamie S. Harrigan (James) of Latham, NY, 14 grandchildren, and three nieces. Ruth F. Countryman, age 87, of Greenport, died Friday, April 3, 2015 at Pine Haven Nursing Home in Philmont. Born January 30, 1928 in Hudson, she is the daughter of the late Harry and Lillian (Hart) Smith. She was also predeceased by her husband, Peter Countryman, her sister, Edith Columbo, and her step-father, Charles Hart. Ruth graduated from Hudson High School in 1946. She was employed for over 40 years as a bank teller with Key Bank in Hudson. Ruth was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hudson and a member of the Altar Guild. She loved nature and the outdoors, where her favorite thing to do was deer hunting. Ruth enjoyed spending time with her family and her pets, especially her cat “Ziggy”. She was an avid bowler. Ruth is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia A. and Stanley J. Kilmer, Sr of Greenport, her grandchildren, Richard (Janel) Gohl of Greenport and Ellie Gohl of Moriah, NY, two great-grandchildren, Lucas And Addison Gohl, and her siblings, Kevin, Ronald, Randy, Sally, and Lorraine Smith. Also surviving are four step-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews. Anna M. Feller, 84, of Livingston, died Friday, April 3, 2015 after a brief illness at Albany Medical Center. She was born in Hudson on December 31, 1930, to the late Guistino and Olympia Ciancetta. She was also predeceased by her husband, Arthur F. Feller, Sr., whom she married November 30, 1952, and two brothers, Angelo and Joseph Ciancetta. Anna graduated from Hudson High School in 1948. She was a homemaker and devoted to her family. She was a member of the Clermont Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary’s Church, in Hudson. She is survived by her children, Denise M. Feller of Livingston, Florence (Robert) Stickles of Livingston, and Arthur F. Feller, Jr. of Greenport, her siblings, Carmine (Carol) Ciancetta, Marie (Thomas) Quigley, and Victoria Jenowich, four grandchildren, Erika Feller of Greenport, Adam (Angelina) Stickles of Morgan Hill, CA, Brian (Caitlin) Stickles of Germantown, and Jessica (Michael) Lopin of New Rochelle, one great-grandchild, Andrea Lopin, and many nieces and nephews. L. Gordon Delp
L. Gordon Delp, 94, of Greenport, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Albany Medical Center. Born May 14, 1920 in Ojibwa, Wisconsin, he is the son of the late Samuel William Delp and Virgie (Moore) Delp. His family moved to a farm in the Town of Coxsackie, NY, in 1921. He graduated from Coxsackie High School in 1937. Gordon served in the Army Air Corps as a Airplane and Engine Mechanic from December 20, 1940 until July 18,1945 with service in North Africa, Island of Pantelleria, Sicily, Italy, India, and China. He was Crew Chief on single and twin engine aircraft. He was awarded the American Defense Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbons with 4 battle stars, and the Good Conduct Medal. He worked many years, both before and after his military service, at Knaust Bros. Mushroom Cannery in Hudson, NY as a mechanic, welder, machinist, and foreman. He retired from Ravena Welding Inc. in Ravena, NY, as Design Draftsman and Field Representative in 1985 after 18 years of service. Gordon was a member of the Methodist Church, a Charter member of Dusty Travelers Travel and Camping Club (NCHA), and a member of the VFW Post 7955 in Copake, NY. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Rubow) Delp, whom he married on July 28, 1942. They were married for almost 62 years before her passing. He was also predeceased by three brothers, Fred Delp, Wayne M. Delp, and S.Deane Delp, and a grandson, Roger Coe. Gordon is survived by his daughter, Judith M. Delp, his son and daughter-in-law, Bradford G. and Donna Delp, two granddaughters, Wendy Delp Meyers, and her husband, Jody, and Michelle Coe Dunham, three great-grandchildren, Aaron G. Dunham, Payton Dunham, and Abby Meyers, a great-great-grandson, Cody Dunham, and many nieces and nephews. Edward F. Card Sr., 97, of Claverack, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Pine Haven Nursing Home in Philmont. Born in Philmont on August 20, 1917, he is the son of the late Wilmer and Edna (Coons) Card. He was also predeceased by his wife, Helen (Korobchuk) Card. Ed is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Edward F. Card, Jr. and Susan Howard-Card of Warwick NY; three grandsons, Justin Card, and his wife, Niccole, and their daughters, Analiese and Cameron, of Warwick, Matthew Card, and his wife, Shanan, and their daughter, Payton (and expecting another daughter in June) of Claverack, and Daniel Card of Warwick; two brothers, Stanford (Edna) Card of Claverack and Robert Card of Philmont, and two sisters, Effie Braunfels of Philmont and Tassie Gent of Valatie. Ed was a World War II Army Veteran, a member of the Philmont American Legion, and a member of both the Philmont Fire Department and the A.B. Shaw Fire Department. He was the owner and operator of Propst Hardware Store in Hudson for many years. After retiring he worked at City Glass until August of 2014. William E. Robertson
William E. Robertson, 91, of Philmont, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Pine Haven Nursing Home in Philmont. Born on May 16, 1923 in Hudson, he is the son of the late William and Mary (Johnson) Robertson. He was also predeceased by his wife, Gloria (Craver) Robertson. Bill served in the US Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945 as a ball turret gunner on a B-17 and survived being shot down over Europe. He earned the European African Middle Eastern Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Air Medal with 1 Bronze Cluster, and 1 Overseas Bar. He was employed by General Electric in Pittsfield, Mass in the Naval Weapons Division retiring in 1985. Bill was an avid athlete and loved snowmobile racing. He played and coached basketball, softball, baseball, and soccer. He was also a lifelong resident of Columbia County. Bill is survived by his daughter: Donna Robertson of Philmont, two grandchildren, Allison Robertson of Catskill and William C. Robertson of New York City, his sister, Kathleen Beecher of Claverack, three great-grandchildren, Emonnie, Dasean, and Joseph, and his sister-in-law, Delores Almstead of Philmont. Robert W. Host, Sr.
Robert W. Host, Sr., 71, of Claverack, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2015 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born May 18, 1943 in Queens, he is the son of the late Arthur and Regina (Gniatowski) Host and John Bekowski. Bob was the owner and operator of Hostie Tree Service in Claverack. He enjoyed traveling and visiting the Amish Country, woodworking and making gifts for his family, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Bob was an honorary member of the New York State Civil War Unit 125th Volunteers. Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Dolores (Dysard) Host; his devoted son, Robert W. Host, Jr.; two brothers, Arthur Host of Washington and John Bekowski of Delaware, two sisters, Irene Bekowski of Athens and Theresa McLatchy of Maine, and the sunshine of his life, Jaylyn Host, his granddaughter. Also surviving are numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. Stella Jarocki, 93, of Claverack, died Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Albany Medical Center. Born September 22, 1921 in Shady Side, New Jersey, she is the daughter of the late Ignacy and Agnes (Kostek) Jarocki. She was also predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Edmund Jarocki, two sisters, Stefania Kazukenus and Stanislawa Jarocki, two infant brothers, Henry and Stanislaw, and her niece, Barbara Kazukenus. Stella graduated from Germantown High School, Albany Business College, and attended Siena College in Loudonville. She was employed in the office of Oppenheim & McEwan Wholesale Grocery in Albany, the New York State Department of Commerce, and as an income tax examiner for the New York State of Taxation and Finance in Albany for 22 years. Stella was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Hudson, the Claverack Garden Club, the Sacred Heart Society until 2002, the Golden Agers of Columbia County, and the Hudson Whalers. Surviving is her sister, Jennie Kenas of Hudson, and nine nieces and nephews, Joanne Endres, Joseph Kenas, Paul Kenas, Teresa Kenas, Michele Archambeault, Susan Coates, Andrew Kazukenus, Peter Kazukenus, and Lorraine Hahn. Deborah A. Cesternino, 59, of Ghent, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2015. Born December 16, 1955 in Wayland, NY, she was the daughter of Hanley and Elizabeth (Peck) Larkin. Deborah was employed as a comptroller for the Town of Chatham. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and spending time with her family. Deborah was the beloved wife of Gary Cesternino of Ghent, and devoted mother of Thomas (Megan) Cesternino, Robert (Leah) Cesternino, Anthony Cesternino, and Giovanna (Michael) Baird. Susan Planz, 70, of Greenport, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Albany Medical Center. Born February 10, 1945 in Hudson, she is the beloved daughter of Regina (Martin) Abitable and the late Paul Abitable, Sr. Susan was employed as a Social Welfare Examiner at Columbia County Department of Social Services. She loved spending time with her family and attending events for her grandchildren and taking pictures of them. She enjoyed gardening, cooking for family holidays, reading, and her cat, Misty. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was very caring to anyone in need and also for animals. She had a very generous and giving heart, especially when it came to the Columbia Greene Humane Society. Surviving is her beloved husband of 52 years, Donald Planz, her devoted daughters, Marie Ellen Moore (Richard) and Valarie S. Rutkowski (Dave), six loving grandchildren, Richard Allan Moore, Jr., Helena Spooner (Mike), Melinda Rutkowski (fiancé, Brian), David Rutkowski, Jr., Katrina Oszust (Paul), and Lenora Rutkowski (Randall Maxwell), and seven special great-grandchildren, Kasey Moore, Kylie Bauer, Carter Moore, Liam Spooner, Kodi Rutkowski, Xzavion Collette, and Braden Hamm. Philip A. Hamm, Sr.
Philip A. Hamm Sr., 73, of Greenport, NY passed away Saturday, May 2, 2015. Born April 16, 1942 in Hudson, NY he is the son of the late Grace (Becker) Hamm and the late Henry C. Hamm. He grew up with many brothers and sisters playing throughout the neighborhoods of Hudson as a child. He would also take adventures along the banks of the Hudson River gathering snakes and snails. As well as an occasional turtle much too his mother’s dismay and the turtle’s. As he grew so did his interest in 50s pop culture and cars in general. He could often be found on Route 9 Saturday nights in Greenport drag racing his friends back when it was a much less traveled road. His tooling about the county inevitably took him to other towns. One being Chatham where he met his wife of 51 years, Lucille, on one Elvis speaker filled evening. As a young father he took his kids to many of his old haunts as a child. Telling stories, in retrospect, of fanciful woe and exaggerated peril to keep the young ones away from dangerous places along the banks of the Hudson river. All the while instilling a great appreciation for nature and the machines that occupy it. He ran his own garage, ‘Phil’s Auto Body Shop’ for over 40 years. The business started out of the family garage often filled with dust and fumes until dark. Then he took the business to Green Street in Hudson where he was able to work on many cars at once and have a small crew lending a valuable hand. A crew made up of close personal friends. The business finally ended up on Route 9 in Greenport where he worked out the remaining years of his career passing on his skills. Philip is survived by his wife, Lucille M. (Tiffany) Hamm, two sons Phil Hamm (daughter-in-law, Donna M. Coons) and Jeff Hamm as well as grandchildren. Of his siblings only one sister survives Marian (Hamm) Bishop as well as many nieces and nephews. His brothers and sisters that have passed are Grace (Hamm) Phillips, George Hamm, Frank Hamm, Lillian (Hamm) Cunningham, Rose Mary Hamm and Henry Hamm. Catherine Mae McCagg Bathrick Gorsline, 93, of Hudson, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Columbia Memorial Hospital. She is now at peace and in God’s hands. Born in Hudson, she was the daughter of Nellie and Niel McCagg. Catherine worked for Krings Nursing Home for many years. She was a member of the Hudson Moose Club for 35 years, the American Legion for 50 years, the VFW Auxiliary for 25 years, and the Greenport Seniors for 25 years. She volunteered for things like the seniors. Catherine was a very special person who was always there for everyone, especially her children. She will be missed by her family and friends, who loved her so much. She is survived by her brother, Fred McCagg, four children, Kenneth Bathrick, Linda Jean Lentz, Starr Duste Smith, and Mildred Shirley Speer, several grandchildren, step-grandchildren (including Stephen (Damienne) Speer, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her close friends, Lillian Heath and Barbara Metz. She was predeceased by six brothers, Charles, John, Gorden, Willard, Alfred, and Clifford McCagg, her grandson, Kenneth Bathrick, Jr., two sons-in-law, Thomas Lentz and Roland (Skip) Speer, and many nieces and nephews. Hazel A. Ormerod, 90, of Claverack, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Pine Haven Nursing Home. Born in Clermont, NY on May 1, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Parker and Annie Cross. Mrs. Ormerod was predeceased by her husband, Lt. Col. Walter L. Ormerod. For 25 years she was a U.S. Air Force Officer’s wife. She also worked as a teachers’ aide at Ockawamick Central School in Claverack. Hazel was a member of the Reformed Dutch Church in Claverack and a member of Columbia Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, W. Parker and Dorothy Ormerod of New Windsor, NY, her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and James Mackerer of Claverack, and five grandchildren, James (Carrie) Mackerer of Virginia, Andrew (Meagan) Mackerer of New Jersey, Matthew (Karen) Mackerer of Copake Falls, Parker (Mike Pretty) Ormerod of Rochester, and Kendra Ormerod of Saranac Lake, NY. Deborah Ann Zyryi passed peacefully in her home in Stottville, NY, on May 7, 2015 at the age of 58. She was born on June 30, 1956 in Albany, NY, and is the daughter of Bernice Christian and the late Oscar F. Christian. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, who enjoyed spending time with her family, giving all. On February 6, 1972 in Hudson, at St. Mary’s Church, she married William Thomas Zyryi, who survives her at home in Stottville. In addition to her mother, surviving are her children, William T. Zyryi, Jr., Kenneth A. Zyryi, Eric P. Zyryi, Suzanne R. Zyryi, and Phillip J. Zyryi. She also leaves her siblings, Denice Howard, the late Barbara Yates, Linda Yates, and Timothy Christian, and 10 grandchildren. Family and friends are welcome to a memorial service in her honor on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 2 pm at God’s Little Campground, 139 George Road, Ghent, NY, 12075.
Betty Jean Nero
Betty Jean Nero, 83, of Hudson, passed away Monday, May 11, 2015 at her residence. Born September 1, 1931 in DeKalb, NY, she was the daughter of the late William and Minnie Klock. She was also predeceased by her husband, John Nero, her daughter, Teresa Matteson, and her brothers, Charles, Earl, Milton, Kenneth, and Lloyd. Betty Jean was a sales person for the Jersey Baking Company in Hudson. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Surviving are her son, John Nero of Hudson and her daughter, Chris Zimmer of Crystal River, Florida; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two sisters, Eva LaRock of Canton and Gladys O’Leary of Norfolk, NY, and several nieces and nephews. At Betty’s request there will be no services. She will be buried in Cedar Park Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
